1.  Focus on your skills

Freelance career is all about selling your skills. If you have a skill to sell, then that is all it takes to establish yourself and start earning. The freelance market is highly competitive, and you will not be the only one possessing the skills, so it is important to build upon it and grow your potential. For instance, if you are a writer, you must find a domain and build your portfolio in it. attend some courses to build your skills. For instance, if you are good at technical writing, maybe you can write a creative writing course to bring some flair to the way you present the content. You can attend a course on online marketing and understand SEO and SMM and how your writing and presentation can be altered to be optimised. 


2.  Ascertain the price of your skills

Neither overcharge nor undercharge for you skills. To understand the market value of the services you are offering at your level or experience or proficiency, first understand what the market is charging and for what level of experience. Someone with a broad spectrum of experiences, beside their skill in their domain is likely to be paid higher. A lot depends on your negotiation skills too. Important point to note is you must set a price below which you will never work and beyond that you must be reasonable enough to acknowledge the rates of someone with your level of skills and experience will get paid.

In freelance work you are marketing and selling yourself and your greatest asset, your skills. So, find avenues to market yourself and your skills. The important thing is to promote your skills and proficiency in it. the key is to market yourself on the right platforms where you will get visibility.

Sometimes it is okay to work at a lower rate if you feel you are getting other intangible value. Maybe it is accompanied with powerful brand name, or you learn a lot from the project or in some other ways it opens new avenues for your career growth. However, be sure to evaluate the overall value addition of the project before deciding to work at a lower rate or on a project that doesn’t challenge you or add value to your portfolio.


5.  Focus on Quality

Always maintain top quality in your work, and the way you interact with your clients. Your client will probably never meet you and there will be a communication gap. So, maintain breadth to accommodate reworks and be patient even where the client sounds agitated or unfairly accusatory in their tone. How well you listen and how much you are willing to work will determine your service quality.
